About ACAP

ACAP Board of Directors

Those fortunate enough to have experienced Africa know there is far more to the continent and its people than is generally seen in the media. While one can readily find information about safari vacations and articles about war, famine, and AIDS, far too few media outlets look further. Thus, many see Africa hunt and mourn but little else.

We exist to celebrate the life, the joy, the richness of Africa and its peoples.

Africa is home to active arts communities, a wealth of history, and diverse peoples with equally diverse languages and cultures. It has provided the roots of not only some of the world’s finest cuisines, but also its music, dance, and arts. It is the very cradle of mankind, the wellspring of the forebearers of every culture and nation. Its people, whether on the continent or within the Diaspora, are a veritable rainbow of color with traditions similar in their joy in life, love, and earned wisdom.

Our hope is to assist those with the desire to learn about the Africa its people see, to provide information about its fascinating destinations outside safari lodges, and provide opportunities to gather together with others who love Africa’s arts and cultures. We hope to create a community where we may all learn from each other. Most of all, we hope to bring all the brilliant colors of Africa to those who see only the darkness.

Our Mission

African Cultural Arts Program was established in the year 2000 to fill the need for a balanced view of the African continent by promoting awareness of its arts and cultures.

What We Do

  • We promote the arts and cultures of Africa by presenting in various artistic forms, the contributions of Africans to the world's artistic and cultural tapestry.
  • We encourage and support the exchange of information and ideas - in collaboration with local and international agencies, community-based organizations and institutions - on issues and projects related to the arts and cultures.
  • We function as a resource center offering programs in fine and performing arts, consisting of classes, seminars, workshops, exhibits, as well as poetry reading, music, drama and dance.
