‘Mama Africa’, Miriam Makeba, dies

Miriam Makeba, fondly known as ‘mama Africa’, has died. She died of a heart attack after appearing in a concert in Caserta, Italy.

Ms. Makeba was born in Johannesburg on 4 March 1932 and was a leading figure in the struggle against apartheid.  In 1965 she became the first black African woman to receive a Grammy award, which she shared with Harry Belafonte.
